Christantus Uche Ignites Dominant Palace Win at Shelbourne.
Even though entering their first-ever European adventure, Oliver Glasner's side are learning very quickly. Without key figures like striker Jean-Philippe Mateta and defender Daniel Muñoz, the Eagles left Dublin with a commanding win that virtually guarantees them a place in the Europa Conference League playoffs.
A further victory in their upcoming match against Finland's KuPS should be sufficient to seal straight entry to the knockout stages, especially after a previous stumble against Strasbourg.
Fringe Players Seize the Opportunity
This match provided a platform for some of Palace's lesser-used players to impress. Christantus Uche, making only his second start since arriving on loan from Getafe, notched the scoring with a clinical finish. Forward Eddie Nketiah contributed a another, finding the net for the second game in succession.
A Shelbourne team that had finished their league season proved outmatched against a largely rotated Palace lineup. The visitors were further weakened by the reports that Mateta and Muñoz are sidelined with leg problems.
Dominance Established from the Start
In spite of heavy rain in Dublin, Palace quickly took control. A flowing passing sequence in the 11th minute, sparked by Daichi Kamada's incisive pass, allowed Nketiah to set up Uche for a straightforward tap-in.
Midfielder Adam Wharton came close soon after, driving a powerful shot over the bar. Nketiah subsequently claimed for a penalty after racing into the area, but the official dismissed the protests.
The formerArsenal striker didn't need to wait long to get his goal, prodding home from a yard out after Uche's effort had struck the post.
Shelbourne were clinging on desperately. Defender Kameron Ledwidge was lucky to escape a booking for two agricultural tackles on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards struck the woodwork with a powerful header from a corner.
Pino Seals the Game
The contest was effectively over eight minutes before half-time. Yeremy Pino meandered past some comically weak challenges before coolly dispatching a shot past goalkeeper Wessel Speel to extend the lead to 3-0.
Following the break, manager Oliver Glasner seized the opportunity to rest several individuals like Kamada and Wharton. Replacement Romain Esse came close to scoring his very first touch, only to see his effort blocked.
Esse was desperately unlucky later on, seeing one attempt crash off each posts before being gathered on the line. Uche then blazed a glaring chance, showing there is still scope for development in his game.
The only concern for Palace was a late injury to Justin Devenny, who was forced off. This paved the way for 17-year-old striker Benji Casey to earn his first-team debut, capping an otherwise perfect night for the visiting side.
